Air Barrier Systems

The Importance of Air Barrier Systems

Air barrier systems applied to new masonry can help prevent air, vapor, and water from leaking into, or out of, a building enclosure. Moisture-laden air is barred from entering the building enclosure. If this is not administered, moisture-laden air can migrate into the building assembly, and when cooled to its dew point, this water vapor turns to liquid water. This liquid water can corrode metals in the building assembly, provide one of the ingredients needed for mold growth, and saturate building materials such as fibrous insulations, gypsum wall board, and wood.

We work directly with your contractor to coordinate the timing of air barrier system installation to ensure proper procedures and protocols are followed. From concepting design to execution of blueprints, it is imperative to match the system with the material in construction. Varieties of membranes, sheathing, wraps, boardstock, foam, etc. need to be analyzed to the correct specifications.

Attempting to remedy air barrier issues after-the fact can prove costly, just as any after manufacture add-on requires piecemealing the original design. At James G. Staat Tuckpointing Inc., we are trained to identity problematic circumstances and make the necessary adjustments to ensure a proper installation. We take the time to do it right the first time – measure twice, seal once!

We are members of the Air Barrier Association of America and received their Quality Assurance Program Excellence Award on March 25th, 2014; awarded for demonstrating a high level of quality installations, professionalism, and in meeting the high standards set by the ABAA Quality Assurance Program for air barriers during 2013.
